The first International Week of the Basic Income

People who are looking for economic and political alternatives to design a more humane social order will not find a way around the idea of the unconditional basic income. Serious tendencies towards further impoverishment worldwide – even in rich industrial states- entail an obvious message. Traditional concepts that offer a solution to fight poverty and to establish social justice have failed.

All the more, citizens are asked to find and to implement an answer - beyond party politics -that meets the interests of all human beings. The unconditional basic income in the form of a legal right for every citizen is the precise response to the demands of the people for humane and fair conditions.

With the Week of the Basic Income, the Network Basic Income wants to strengthen and visualise the demand for change through simultaneous international activities. Our appeal has been joined spontaneously by basic income networks from Switzerland and Austria. We also received positive reaction from our partners of the global basic income network BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network) which stretches from Sweden to South Afrika. Our goal for 2009 is to win more countries for our case.

Whatever size the economic, social and cultural differences between states are – by now, people from all over the world are affected by tendencies towards further impoverishment or ecological catastrophes. For this reason, we cannot surrender in the face of alleged factual constraints which do not allow sustainable solutions.

The Week of the Basic Income begins in German-speaking countries but includes the international perspective. Hereby the context of the core themes varies: whereas we discuss the unconditional basic income in Germany particularly in the light of Hartz IV, in Brazil and Namibia the focus lies on the relation to hunger, HIV and extreme poverty.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the programme is planned and designed by local initiatives in a decentralised manner. As a result, the events of these seven days take on a different face at different places. At some locations political events and discussions are at the foreground and at others cultural events dominate the scene.

The participation of until now 15 cities with over more than 60 items on the programme shows that the week of the basic income will become a successful event. We are certain that until mid of September additional programmes will join. You will always find up to date information on this website.

If you want to participate in the week of the basic income, please send suggestions, ideas or dates to koordination@woche-des-grundeinkommens.org or to our press office.
